Resident breeder on the Falkland Islands. Length: 14 - 15 cm (6 inches) Falklands 'Sparrow'. Male and female are very different, female is a drab plain buff with an under -tinge of yellow and streaked with brown, blending perfectly with the ground, while the male has a distinct black bib and mask, a blueish head and yellow underparts. They feeds on seeds and berries of various plants including diddle-dee.
In the Falklands Black-throated finches are widespread, in coastal and inland areas. The don't inhabit dense tussac but are found on heathland, open grasslands, beach greens and sand grass dunes.
M. m. melanodera is restricted to the Falkland Islands, but the race M.m. princetoniana is found in Chile and Argentina and the Magellanic Islands.
